Install OrangeFox Recovery

OrangeFox is what happens when developers think "TWRP is great, but we can make it prettier and add more features."

It's become my go-to recovery for devices that support it. Here's how to get it on yours.

Device Compatibility

OrangeFox doesn't support all devices. Check first:

Devices with official support:

• Most Xiaomi/Redmi/POCO devices
• Many OnePlus devices
• Select Samsung devices
• Some Realme devices
• Various others

If not listed: Device might have unofficial builds on XDA.

Step 1: Download OrangeFox

Find Your Device

1. Go to orangefox.download
2. Search for your device
3. Use device codename, not marketing name

Download Correct Version

You'll see:

• Stable: Tested, recommended
• Beta: Newer features, possible bugs

Choose stable for daily use.

File Types

OrangeFox comes as:

• .img - Flash via fastboot
• .zip - Flash via existing recovery

Step 2: Unlock Bootloader

If not already unlocked:

# Enable OEM unlock in Developer Options first
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flashing unlock
# Confirm on device

Note: This wipes all data.

Step 3: Flash OrangeFox

Method 1: Fastboot (Recommended)

# Boot to fastboot mode
adb reboot bootloader
# Or: Power + Volume Down

# Flash recovery
fastboot flash recovery orangefox-xxx.img

# Boot directly to recovery
fastboot reboot recovery

Method 2: From Existing Recovery

If you have TWRP already:

1. Copy OrangeFox.zip to phone
2. Boot to TWRP
3. Install → Select OrangeFox.zip
4. Reboot → Recovery

Method 3: Magisk Module

Some devices support:

1. Install OrangeFox Magisk module
2. Reboot to recovery

Step 4: First Boot Setup

Initial Configuration

First boot into OrangeFox:

• Set language
• Choose theme
• Configure password (optional)
• Allow modifications when prompted

Essential Settings

Navigate to Settings and configure:

General:

• Timezone (important for backups)
• Language
• Haptic feedback

Security:

• Recovery password (optional but recommended)
• PIN protection

Appearance:

• Theme selection
• Accent colors
• Statusbar style

Main Screen

The home screen shows:

Installing ZIPs

1. Tap "Install"
2. Navigate to your ZIP file
3. Select and swipe to install
4. For multiple files: Queue them up

Creating Backups

1. Tap "Backup"
2. Select partitions:
   - Boot ✓ (always)
   - System ✓ (recommended)
   - Vendor ✓ (recommended)
   - Data (optional, large)
3. Name your backup
4. Swipe to backup

Built-in Magisk Installer

1. Settings → OrangeFox Settings
2. Enable "Built-in Magisk"
3. Now tapping "Install Magisk" applies it automatically

Password/PIN Management

For encrypted devices:

Settings → Security → Manage encryption password

Can also reset lockscreen password from here.

Fox Manager App

OrangeFox can install a companion app:

Settings → Install Fox Manager

Lets you trigger OrangeFox features from Android:

• Boot to recovery
• Check for updates
• View backup status

1. Advanced → ADB Sideload
2. On computer: adb sideload rom.zip
3. Watch progress on device

Troubleshooting

Can't Boot to OrangeFox

# Boot directly to recovery
fastboot reboot recovery

# If still fails, reflash
fastboot flash recovery orangefox.img
fastboot reboot recovery

Decryption Fails

If OrangeFox can't decrypt your storage:

1. Check if OrangeFox version matches your Android version
2. Try OrangeFox build specifically for your ROM
3. Last resort: Format Data (loses everything)

Touch Not Responding

1. Press Power to lock/unlock screen
2. Try rotating device
3. Reflash OrangeFox

OrangeFox Gets Replaced by Stock

Some devices replace recovery on boot:

After flashing OrangeFox:
1. Boot directly to recovery (fastboot reboot recovery)
2. Install Magisk before booting to system
3. Magisk prevents recovery replacement

My Tips

Backup Strategy

I create backups named like:

2024-12-24_evolux_working

Keep last 2-3 backups. Delete old ones to save space.

Before Major Changes

Always backup:

• Boot + System + Vendor before ROM change
• Full backup before experimental stuff

Theme Recommendations

• Dark themes save battery on OLED
• High contrast themes for visibility in sunlight
• Pick what matches your ROM aesthetic
